Growing up, Walt went by his middle name LeGrand. (He was “the greatest,” after all.) It was as a soldier in the army of occupation in Japan following World War II that he became known as Walt.
Erline sometimes called him LeGrand–the name he had when she fell in love with him–and sometimes Walt. As a father of five sons, he generally answered the phone by announcing “Walt Whipple, electrician.”
Erline was named after her father, Earl. (Her name omitted the “a”.) She had no middle name. After marriage, she generally gave her maiden name (Atkinson) at her middle name.
